Doping is still a problem in cycling, Benedetto Roberti | bettor.com

Doping is still a problem in cycling, Benedetto Roberti

Italian investigation judge Benedetto Roberti noted that doping is still a problem in sports revealing that the new undetectable versions of EPO are still being used in by several cyclists as reported by Tuttobici magazine.

Benedetto uncovered several doping criminals related to the Lance Armstrong case and also the disclosed the key evidence against the controversial Dr. Michele Ferrari.

He stated that doping is currently operational in every level of cycling wither it be professional, amateur and even Gran Fondo riders use performance enhancing drugs to achieve the desired results.

Roberti said that, it is a normal perception to have a soft corner for the cyclists but it is the riders themselves who are to be blamed for their wrongdoings more than anyone else.

He told the magazine that the sport is badly plagued with doping and things are not looking good in the future.

Even exposing Lance Armstrong in the biggest doping scandal of all times has not really changed the preposition much.

Cyclists in all levels of the game are still doping to enhance their performances without even thinking about the consequences or how badly they can influence the game.

?We're dealing with scruple-less people who inject themselves with everything, without knowing what they're doing: products stolen from hospitals, from Eastern countries without any guarantees on the quality".

He revealed that according to the latest information the newly used substances that are untraceable are currently used by several cyclists.

Erythropoietin Z by Retacrit, known as EPO Z is an example along with a new version of the Chinese EPO that can easily get you pass any doping test and was the best seller in the recent Olympics.

?There's also AICAR that is brought in from the East as a powder and is apparently a kind of genetic doping. In simple terms, it helps reset muscle fibres after huge efforts. It can't be found in anti-doping tests either".

"So have things improved? Has sport and especially cycling really taken a new direction? I say no and whoever says the opposite doesn't love our sport".

It will be interesting to see, how UCI responds to Benedetto Roberti allegations and takes necessary measures to prevent any future damages to the sport.

'Dairy cliff' may be avoided, for a year at least

5 hrs.

Farm-state lawmakers have agreed to a one-year extension of the expiring U.S. farm bill that, if enacted, would head off a possible doubling of retail milk prices to $7.00 or more a gallon in 2013.?

The compromise measure resulted from bipartisan discussions in the House of Representatives' Agriculture Committee and talks with colleagues in the U.S. Senate, Frank Lucas of Oklahoma, the House panel's chairman, said in a statement Sunday.?

"It is not perfect - no compromise ever is - but it is my sincere hope that it will pass the House and Senate and be signed by the President by January 1," Lucas, a Republican, said.?

It was not immediately clear whether House and Senate leaders would bring the measure to a vote soon enough to avoid putting the so-called "dairy cliff" milk price spike into action.?

Separately, lawmakers are working on a last-ditch effort to avert the similarly timed "fiscal cliff," when the biggest tax increases ever to hit Americans are set to start, paired with significant federal spending cuts?

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, in an interview with CNN taped Friday and aired on Sunday, urged Congress to come up with such a solution, if only an extension of the old law that expired nearly three months ago, lest milk prices start rising after Jan. 1, 2013.?

Absent a new bill or an extension of current law, milk prices would revert to rules set in 1949, the last "permanent" farm legislation in the United States. Government price supports would kick in, based on production costs 64 years ago, plus inflation. The potential retail milk price has been estimated at $6.00 to $8.00 a gallon versus current levels near $3.50.?

Lucas said in the statement that time had run out in Congress' current session to enact a new five-year farm bill, as farm-state lawmakers and the dairy lobby had hoped.?

Vilsack told CNN that soaring milk prices - if it comes to that - would ripple throughout all commodities "if this thing goes on for an extended period of time."?

The price of milk will not double on Jan. 1, if Congress fails to act. Instead, prices would rise gradually as supplies are removed from normal markets and land instead in U.S. Department of Agriculture storage facilities.?

With supplies more scarce in normal marketing channels, some milk distributors and dairy product manufacturers could have turned to imported supplies.?

The Department of Agriculture is reviewing a range of options for administering programs should a permanent law become legally effective on Jan. 1, a spokesman said on Friday.?

The Senate passed its new five-year farm bill in June, and the House Agriculture Committee followed with a version in July.?

But the House bill, with large cuts in food-stamp funding for lower-income Americans, has never been brought to a vote by the full House. The Senate and House have for months remained far apart on the issues of food stamps and crop subsidies.?

Lucas said the year-long extension "provides certainty to our producers and critical disaster assistance to those affected by record drought conditions."?

It would also mean another round of the direct subsidies to farmers that cost about $5 billion a year, and that both sides of debate had agreed earlier to eliminate.?

Egypt transfers tons of building materials to Gaza

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) ? Thousands of tons of building materials such as cement and steel began crossing into the Gaza Strip on Saturday, Egyptian and Palestinian officials said, temporarily easing a five year old blockade on the coastal territory.

An Egyptian security official said shipment was made in consultation with Israeli officials, who were in Cairo Thursday to discuss security in the Sinai Peninsula and the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire agreed upon by Gaza's Hamas rulers and Israel last month. The Egyptian official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The director of Gaza's border authority, Maher Abu Sabha, confirmed to The Associated Press that a total of 20 trucks carrying materials were expected to arrive in the coastal strip Saturday through the Rafah border crossing.

Qatar is paying for the raw materials that were bought in Egypt, the official added.

The tiny oil-rich Gulf country has pledged 24 projects worth some $425 million in the Gaza Strip to improve crumbling housing, schools, a hospital and roads.

Under former President Hosni Mubarak, Israel's longtime ally, Egypt had poor relations with Hamas, and teamed up with Israel to blockade Gaza after the militant group seized power from its rival Fatah in 2007, two years after winning elections.

While Israel has eased the blockade in recent years, key restrictions remain in place on exports out of Gaza and the entry of badly needed building materials and other goods into the territory.

New Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, of Hamas' parent group the Muslim Brotherhood, has vowed not to abandon the Palestinians. Unlike Mubarak in late 2008, Morsi kept the border crossing with the Gaza Strip open for movement of people and humanitarian supplies during Israel's latest offensive in November. Gaza has yet to fully recover from the two offensives, which left buildings, homes and schools in rubble.

Morsi reiterated in a nationwide speech Saturday that the Palestinian issue is important to Egyptians.

Since the blockade was first imposed, an extensive network of tunnels between Egypt and Gaza have been ferrying everything from cars to food to essential household items to Palestinians.

While Egypt has launched periodic crackdowns on the tunnels, its security forces generally ignore the movement of construction materials, fuel and consumer goods through what Palestinians consider an underground lifeline.

If cut, fiscal deal will pale against expectations

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A year-end deadline looming, Senate negotiators remained short of an agreement Sunday to prevent across-the-board tax increases for millions. President Barack Obama blamed Republicans for putting the nation's shaky economy at risk.

Despite indications of progress in the negotiations, Democrats said Republicans were seeking to slow future cost of living increases for Social Security recipients as part of a compromise to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. Republicans declined to confirm the assertion ? and one GOP official disputed it ? but noted that Obama said in a television interview broadcast earlier in the day he had advanced such a proposal in earlier talks with Republicans.

The fate of the negotiations remained in doubt, with both the House and Senate meeting during the day, two days before the beginning of a new year that would trigger across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts that leaders in both parties have said they want to avoid.

"We have been talking to the Republicans ever since the election was over," Obama said in the interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" that aired Sunday. "They have had trouble saying yes to a number of repeated offers."

Senate leaders Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., were hoping for a deal that would prevent higher taxes for most Americans while letting rates rise at higher income levels, although the precise point at which that would occur was a major sticking point.

Also at issue were the estate tax, taxes on investment income and dividends, continued benefits for the long-term unemployed and a pending 27.5 percent cut in payment levels for doctors who treat Medicare patients.

"I feel fine," McConnell said in response to questions from reporters about the status of negotiations.

Obama, in the NBC interview, said that while he had been "modestly optimistic" late last week, "we don't yet see an agreement."

As the Senate opened a rare Sunday session, Chaplain Barry Black offered a timely prayer for lawmakers.

"Lord show them the right thing to do and give them the courage to do it," Black said. "Look with favor on our nation and save us from self-inflicted wounds."

Senate negotiators were haggling over what threshold of income to set as the demarcation between current tax rates and higher tax rates. They were negotiating over estate limits and tax levels, how to extend unemployment benefits, how to prevent cuts in Medicare payments to doctors and how to keep a minimum income tax payment designed for the rich from hitting about 28 million middle class taxpayers.

Obama pressed lawmakers to start where both sides say they agree ? sparing middle-class families from looming tax hikes.

"If we can get that done, that takes a big bite out of the fiscal cliff. It avoids the worst outcomes. And we're then going to have some tough negotiations in terms of how we continue to reduce the deficit, grow the economy, create jobs," Obama said in the NBC interview.

Gone, however, is the talk of a grand deal that would tackle broad spending and revenue demands and set the nation on a course to lower deficits. Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner were once a couple hundred billion dollars apart of a deal that would have reduced the deficit by more than $2 trillion over ten years.

Republicans have complained that Obama has demanded too much in tax revenue and hasn't proposed sufficient cuts or savings in the nation's massive health care programs.

Obama upped the pressure on Republicans to negotiate a fiscal deal, arguing that GOP leaders have rejected his past attempts to strike a bigger and more comprehensive bargain.

"The offers that I've made to them have been so fair that a lot of Democrats get mad at me," Obama said.

Boehner disagreed, saying Sunday that the president had been unwilling to agree to anything "that would require him to stand up to his own party."

Don Stewart, a spokesman for McConnell, said Sunday: "While the president was taping those discordant remarks yesterday, Sen. McConnell was in the office working to bring Republicans and Democrats together on a solution."

The trimmed ambitions of today are a far cry from the upbeat bipartisan rhetoric of just six weeks ago, when the leadership of Congress went to the White House to set the stage for negotiations to come.

"I outlined a framework that deals with reforming our tax code and reforming our spending," Boehner said as the leaders gathered on the White House driveway on Nov. 16.

"We understand that it has to be about cuts, it has to be about revenue, it has to be about growth, it has to be about the future," House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said at the time. "I feel confident that a solution may be in sight."

South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham is predicting that without at least 28 of the 47 GOP senators on board with any given proposal, House Speaker John Boehner wouldn't be able to get the votes to pass it.

If Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., "can't get 60 percent of us to vote for this deal, it will be hard for Boehner to get it through the House. And I want to vote for it even though I won't like it because the country's got a lot at stake here," Graham said on "Fox News Sunday".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said the 2.1 million Americans whose extended unemployment benefits ran out on Saturday are already feeling the pain of Congress' inaction.

"From this point on, it's lose-lose. My big worry is a contraction of the economy, the loss of jobs, which could be well over 2 million in addition to the people already on unemployment. I think contraction of the economy would be just terrible for this nation. I think we need a deal, we should do a deal," Feinstein said on "Fox News Sunday."

But the deal was not meant to settle other outstanding issues, including more than $1 trillion in cuts over 10 years, divided equally between the Pentagon and other government spending. The deal also would not address an extension of the nation's borrowing limit, which the government is on track to reach any day but which the Treasury can put off through accounting measures for about two months.

That means Obama and the Congress are already on a new collision path. Republicans say they intend to use the debt ceiling as leverage to extract more spending cuts from the president. Obama has been adamant that unlike 2011, when the country came close to defaulting on its debts, he will not yield to those Republican demands.

Lawmakers have until the new Congress convenes to pass any compromise, and even the calendar mattered. Democrats said they had been told House Republicans might reject a deal until after Jan. 1, to avoid a vote to raise taxes before they had technically gone up, and then vote to cut taxes after they had risen.

(AP) ? Looks like Shamu may soon be making a splash in the stock market.

The company famous for water shows featuring killer whales, dolphins and other animals at SeaWorld said Thursday that it is planning to go public. SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. has filed for an initial public offering of stock aimed at raising $100 million. That number is likely to change as the company's bankers gauge interest from investors.

From its origins as a Busch Gardens animal park at Anheuser-Busch's Tampa Budweiser brewery, the company has grown to span 11 theme parks housing 67,000 animals. Besides the three SeaWorld parks, the company owns two Busch Gardens parks and Sesame Place, an amusement park based on the children's TV show Sesame Street.

The company warns that its business is dependent on customers' willingness to spend on leisure and entertainment ? which may be a tough proposition in a still-weak U.S. economy. Still, SeaWorld's revenue has risen in the three years that it's been owned by private equity firm Blackstone Group LP. The company has looked for ways to stay competitive in the current market, branching out this year with a Saturday morning television show, "Sea Rescue," on the ABC network to attract young viewers.

Blackstone is expected to sell some of its stock in the IPO but keep a majority stake, SeaWorld said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. SeaWorld plans to use money raised in the IPO to pay down debt and make a payment to the New York-based firm.

Blackstone bought SeaWorld, formerly Busch Entertainment Corp., from beer brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2009 for $2.3 billion. The Belgian company was shedding assets to help pay for its $52 billion takeover of St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch in 2008.

Anheuser-Busch started Busch Gardens in Tampa in 1959. The beer company bought SeaWorld, whose park opened in San Diego in 1964, in 1989. SeaWorld is now based in the theme park mecca of Orlando, Fla., also home to Walt Disney Co.'s Walt Disney World resort and Universal Studios. More than half of the company's revenue is generated in Florida.

SeaWorld said about 24 million people attended its 11 parks during the 12 months ended Sept. 30. The company did not disclose how that figure has grown or shrank in the past few years, but says it has a "stable attendance base." In the first nine months of 2012, SeaWorld's profit jumped 73 percent to $86.2 million from $50 million a year earlier, as revenue rose nearly 8 percent to $1.16 billion.

Some of the company's competitors have had a difficult climb back from the recession. Amusement park operator Six Flags Entertainment Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009, emerging in mid-2010. It has been growing revenue since then, although it posted a loss in 2011.

SeaWorld, which plans to trade under the ticker "SEAS" on the Nasdaq, did not name a date for its IPO or detail how many shares will be sold, and at what price, in its filing with regulators. But SeaWorld did warn investors of the risks involved with having its animals interact with human visitors, noting that accidents could hurt its parks' reputation and attendance. In 2010, a trainer at its SeaWorld Orlando park was killed by an orca, or killer, whale. Last month an 8-year-old Georgia girl said a dolphin at the same Orlando park bit her hand while she fed the animal as part of an attraction.

Chevron CEO: Policies show risk of high energy prices is greater than risk of climate change

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Chevron CEO John Watson notices something important as he visits his company's operations around the globe: Governments everywhere find high energy prices much scarier than the threat of global warming.

And that means the world will need a lot more oil and gas in the years to come.

To meet that demand, Chevron is in the midst of an enormous cycle of investment aimed at extracting oil and gas from wherever it hides in the earth's crust.

Chevron Corp., based in San Ramon, Calif., is the second largest investor-owned oil and gas company in the world, and the third largest American company of any type as measured by revenue and profit. Over the last year, Chevron has earned $24 billion on revenue of $231 billion.

Every day, the company produces the equivalent of 2.7 million barrels of oil and gas, mostly outside the U.S.

Next year Chevron will invest $33 billion ? more than it ever has ? to drill wells, erect platforms, build refineries and scan for undiscovered deposits of oil and gas. Among its biggest projects: A natural gas operation in Australia that will ultimately cost Chevron and its partners $65 billion to build. Also planned are three deep-water drilling and production projects in the Gulf of Mexico that will cost $16 billion.

Watson, a 55-year-old California native and Chevron lifer, joined the company in 1980 as a financial analyst. Before becoming CEO in 2010 he was vice chairman in charge of strategic planning, business development and mergers and acquisitions. He also ran the company's international exploration and production business, led the company's integration with Texaco and was CFO.

Watson has helped shape Chevron into the best performing major oil company in the world by several financial benchmarks, including the profit it makes for each barrel of oil it sells.

In an interview at The Associated Press headquarters in New York, Watson discussed world energy dynamics, U.S. energy policy, hydraulic fracturing, and working abroad. Below are excerpts, edited for length and clarity.

AP: Why do people and politicians dislike big oil companies that deliver the energy they rely on and benefit from?

WATSON: They don't feel like they have the choices. Most products that you consume every day, you have a choice. In energy you have less choice. And as costs rise, it hits the family budget. It's a convenience that we like, but we'd rather pay less for it.

AP: Is there anything you can do about that?

WATSON: Invest in good projects around the world. Every drop of oil that we produce anywhere in the world hits world markets and, other things being equal, brings prices down.

AP: What do you think is the biggest misunderstanding about your company or your industry?

WATSON: Just how much we invest in the business and the risks that we take to deliver the oil and gas that we all expect every day. We literally go to the ends of the earth to bring this energy to consumers.

AP: Can the industry continue to produce oil and gas at a price that can keep the world economy growing?

WATSON: I think so. We want to produce at a price our customers can afford, and I think there's ample resource to do that for the foreseeable future.

AP: Energy companies complain that the U.S. is over-regulated, but at the same time they are expanding here and cite its many advantages. Which is it? Is the U.S. a terrible place to do business, or is it terrific?

WATSON: On balance it's a good place to do business. We always have to be aware of what other governments are doing, and we have to be sure that we stay competitive. When I met with the president with some of my colleagues a couple weeks ago, that was the first thing that people talked about. It wasn't about taxes per se, it was about staying competitive.

AP: People on all sides of the energy debate have long complained about the lack of a comprehensive energy policy in the U.S. Are we wishing for something that just can't happen in this country? And if not, what would it look like to you?

WATSON: Historically the United States has had a wonderful energy policy. We're blessed with a diversity of resources. We have oil. We have gas. We have coal. We have nuclear. And renewables. And as a result, one of our biggest competitive advantages has been affordable energy. You need a strong economy and you need affordable energy to fuel that economy.

AP: Do fossil fuel producers bear the responsibility for curbing greenhouse gas emissions?

WATSON: We have the responsibility to deliver our energy in an environmentally sound fashion. The greatest advancements in living standards in recorded history have taken place in the modern hydrocarbon era. I don't think that's coincidental. Our leaders have to make a decision. Do they want that to continue or do they have a better solution for us? So it's not my call.

AP: How should society go about reducing greenhouse gas emissions?

WATSON: If you look around the world, the countries with the best environmental practices are the wealthiest. There's a reason for that. If you're worried about where your next meal is going to come from or shelter over your head, your focus is on those things.

AP: The U.S. is a wealthy country, how should we reduce emissions?

WATSON: Well, we are a wealthy country. On the other hand, the economy is growing slowly. We have high unemployment. I think that's part of the reason why the president said now is not the time for a carbon tax, because he recognized that that would put pressure on the economy and put pressure on our energy prices, put pressure on manufacturing business, put pressure on consumers.

AP: When it's time to address the carbon issue, how should we do it?

WATSON: It's very difficult for the United States to go it alone. Watch what (other) governments do. The day-to-day decisions being made (show) that concern about climate change is less than other concerns that they have. China is racing by the U.S. in greenhouse gas emissions. Germany is shutting down their nuclear power, the only energy source with zero carbon emissions that can be produced at scale. Japan, much the same way. Governments around the world are making the choice that the benefits of lifting people out of squalor are very important. And affordable energy is the way to get there. And that currently comes through oil, gas and coal.

That doesn't mean there's nothing we can do. First, we can do a lot more on energy efficiency in this country. There are a number of promising technologies to deliver lower carbon fuels. I would support (government funding) of pre-commercial activity to try to advance some of these breakthrough technologies, rather than putting big subsidies on technologies that we know are more expensive and won't necessarily solve the issue.

AP: Will fracking be curtailed in this country?

WATSON: I see very little obstacle to it, notwithstanding all the rhetoric. Now it's being done in some different areas. People aren't used to it, and there have been legitimate concerns expressed, like truck traffic at a simple level, but also concerns about water supplies. They're understandable anxieties. And so we have to work through those with the governments. I think in due course we'll do that because they'll see the advantages to it.

AP: Will natural gas become a bigger part of the energy mix?

WATSON: Natural gas will displace coal in power generation. Getting natural gas into the transportation fleet is harder. It works best for vehicles that work from centralized fueling facilities like trucking fleets or buses and cabs. That is happening. Before it can make big inroads beyond that, infrastructure is going to need to be developed. It will take some time.

AP: A recent factory fire in Bangladesh killed more a hundred people, shining a spotlight on the connections between Western companies and overseas suppliers. What is the responsibility of a company like yours when you go into a developing area?

WATSON: We have global standards for how we operate. And it's our responsibility to operate to those high standards everywhere. We use local labour in almost all cases and we spend an enormous amount of time training people. We provide half the natural gas in Bangladesh. I've been there a number of times. Novel role of BRCA1 in regulating the survival of skin stem cells identified

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Researchers have uncovered a novel role of BRCA1 in regulating the survival of skin stem cells.

Our DNA, which stores our genetic information, is constantly submitted to damage. If not properly repaired, DNA damage can lead to cell death, which may in turn lead to tissue exhaustion and aging, or induce mutations resulting in uncontrolled cell proliferation and cancer. Brca1 is a key gene that mediates DNA repair. Mutations in Brca1 lead to familial and sporadic breast and ovarian cancer in humans.

In this study published in Genes and Development, researchers led by C?dric Blanpain, MD/PhD, Professor at Universit? libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and WELBIO investigator, showed the critical role of Brca1 for the maintenance of hair follicle stem cells.

Peggy Sotiropoulou and colleagues showed that upon deletion of the breast cancer associated gene Brca1 in the epidermis, hair follicle cells show high levels of DNA damage and cell death, which induce hyperproliferation and finally exhaustion of hair follicle stem cells resulting in hair follicle degeneration. In contrast, the other types of stem cells located in the epidermis, which are forming the skin barrier and the sebaceous glands, are maintained and continue to function normally despite the absence of BRCA1, demonstrating the different requirement for BRCA1 in the distinct types of adult stem cells. "We were very surprised to see that distinct types of cells residing within the same tissue may exhibit such profoundly different responses to the deletion of the same, crucial gene for DNA repair gene" comments Peggy Sotiropoulou, the first author of this study.

This work is very important to understand the DNA repair mechanisms in different types of adult stem cells and at different stages of their activation. If other stem cells of the body also require BRCA1 for their survival, this result may potentially explain why Brca1 mutations in women lead preferentially to the development of only breast and ovarian cancers.

This work was supported by the FNRS, WELBIO, the program d'excellence CIBLES of Wallonia, a research grant from the Fondation Contre le Cancer, the Fondation ULB, the Fonds Yvonne Bo?l, and the Fonds Gaston Ithier, a starting grant of the European Research Council (ERC) and the EMBO Young Investigator Program.

Holistic care for pets | Hernando Today

By FRED BELLET | Hernando Today correspondent

Behind the glass window of the treatment room, Gerald Johnson was inserting the last two of 14 stainless steel, electrical acupuncture needles into his patient.

Assistant Lisa Matthews comforted the 4-year-old by holding her head as the doctor placed the last needle in, just over the region of the gall bladder.

All along, the patient didn't flinch and maintained her puppy dog eyes.

The patient's name was Sula, short for Ursula. Sula is a miniature longhaired dachshund and she's among Johnson's patients that undergo holistic veterinary treatment at the Silverthorn Animal Clinic.

Sula, according to Matthews, became a patient after another dog, a much larger Rottweiler, sat on her back and ruptured a disc, causing chronic pain.

At the time of treatment, Sula didn't seem to mind the needles and once the electrical impulse began flowing through the wires from the electronic acupunctoscope, the dog's energy changed.

Sula was surely showing signs of relaxation and feeling relief from any pain.

As the electrical acupuncture can take 10 minutes or longer, the emphasis for utilizing the treatment is placed on various evaluations based upon clinical history, diagnostic tests and what the physical examination reveals. The number of acupuncture needles depends on what the treatment is for.

The holistic treatment has an effect on everyone involved, Johnson said, and encourages the pet owner to be present during the treatment.

Johnson said some veterinarians take issue regarding the medical claims of acupuncture: "Some of my colleagues pooh-pooh it saying there's not enough research yet."

While acupuncture may not be standard practice for all veterinarians, Johnson has seen positive results from various holistic treatment options.

Sonya Kennedy of Brooksville says she and her husband live a holistic lifestyle. Recently, they extended that lifestyle to their pet Chihuahua, Topolino.

One day, Kennedy and Topolino were playing the usual game of fetch when something happened.

"I threw the ball but he didn't run for it. He just sat there and stared at me," she said.

Kennedy knew something was wrong.

The next day, "he was dragging both back legs behind him. He was paralyzed," she said. Kennedy sought help, and her suspicions were confirmed ? Topolino was diagnosed with a ruptured disc.

"A lot of people put their animals down with an injury like this," Kennedy said. "They think the dog is suffering and they have to put the animal down."

Surgery is expensive and for some, she said with a sigh, it's not an alternative.

Rather than see Topolino suffer, Kennedy sought out a holistic veterinarian. After all, she and her husband were very much in tune with holistic and alternative medicine for themselves.

"We knew we wanted to heal Topolino holistically," she said.

Topolino became a patient of Johnson. It took about a month of weekly electrical acupuncture treatments in conjunction with homeopathy remedies, vitamins and Chinese herbs for Topolino to make a comeback.

According to Kennedy, Topolino was back to being a happy dog. She said the cost of the acupuncture treatments was affordable, compared to the only alternative, which is surgery, she said.

Kennedy misses the fun of throwing the ball and having Topolino retrieve it, she said.

"We don't play ball anymore." It's just a precaution.

A University of Florida alumnus, Johnson introduced the ancient science of acupuncture into his traditional practice because he was frustrated with typical veterinary medicine. Acupuncture got the ball rolling in offering options to his patients.

He studied the benefits of Chinese herbs and progressed to homeopathic, chiropractic and massage therapy among other treatments associated with alternative, holistic, naturopathic or nonconventional approaches.

It's lucky for Samson he did.

Samson is a 13-month-old German mountain dog, also known as a Leonberger. As he waited for his regularly scheduled chiropractic adjustment, he rested his large head on the floor, twice the size of the feet of his owner, Ron Davis of Brooksville.

When standing, Samson is about two feet high and weighs in at nearly 140 pounds. Also known as Sammy, he has been a patient of the Silverthorn Animal Clinic since he was a month old.

"I bring him here on a regular basis to keep him lined up" said Davis, referring to the straightness of Samson's spine.

"He's still got another year of growth," Davis added, so he's been keeping an eye on the dog's bone development.

From the waiting room to the examination room, Samson knew the way.

Samson's large body compelled Johnson to use parts of his own body ? his legs, hips and knees ? to keep Samson in place during the examination.

Like a chiropractor would on a human body, Johnson uses his hands to probe the dog's body for any anomaly, to see what's out of place.

"He's very flexible," Johnson said.

The chiropractic adjustment works deeper than just the skeleton. It goes to the nervous system, and with the correct alignment comesthe right circulation through the body, and improved communication between the brain and the internal organs.

"Samson gets a chiropractic adjustment from front to back, just mainly for his alignment," Johnson said.

As Johnson worked in the neck area, he made a cervical adjustment and tilted Samson's head. By the look on the dog's face, it may have been a spot in need of relief.

"I go through the body in segments and check the alignment, Johnson said. "What we find, we adjust."

At the end of the session, Johnson used an instrument called an adjusting tool. The spring-loaded tool looks like a fancy corkscrew, but is capable of moving a vertebra back into place. Samson paid no attention to the snapping tool as the doctor moved it up his back.

At the completion of the treatment, the huge dog seemed happy and lunged forward to give the doctor a smooch on his face.

Instead Samson landed on the doctor's shoulder. Just as he did, Samson's gums lashed a little drool Johnson's way. The doctor was quick enough to tilt his head to the right, avoiding the splatter.

He gave Samson a kiss goodbye.

Before leaving the clinic, Davis said, "Dr. Johnson has done a marvelous job with Samson," adding that there are only five Leonberger dogs in the state of Florida. Davis wants to keep his in good shape.

Less Common Ways of Saving on Auto Insurance Quotes | Business ...

When shopping for car insurance, there are many options open to you. It can be overwhelming and seem difficult to save any money. Here are some less conventional ways that you can save money on your auto insurance quotes.

Do you have a large or small car? The size of your car can impact your auto insurance quotes. A smaller car weighs less, and is therefore more likely to be involved n a serious accident. You are also more likely to drive a smaller car more often. On the flip side, if you own a truck, van, or SUV, you might end up paying more because of the costs of repairing these types of vehicles. In order to save the most money, look at the costs of maintaining your vehicle vs. the costs to insure a vehicle and make your car buying decision based on these figures.

Look into purchasing a hybrid vehicle. Most people skip on considering hybrid vehicles because they often cost more up front. However, they will most likely save you money in multiple ways. First, there are often tax credits or deductions available for people who purchase a hybrid. You can also sometimes get a discount directly from your insurance agency. Finally, and most obviously, you will save money on gasoline costs. Some insurance companies offer up to 10% off for a hybrid vehicle, so they are worth your consideration.

How much do you drive? You should figure out a rough estimate of how many miles you drive each year before beginning your insurance search. People who drive more miles will likely end up paying a higher premium. This is because the more often you are on the road, the more chances you have of getting into an accident, making you slightly more risky to insure. Some companies offer a monitoring device so they can know how often and at what times you drive, and offer you a discount based on the results.

Choose a reputable carrier. Before committing to a policy, research the company?s reputation. Find out whether or not they have had numerous legitimate complaints. Also check the financial rating. You can find this information through online reviews, employees of the company, or family and friends that have used it.

Are you going to be insuring young drivers? Teenaged drivers are statistically more likely to have an accident, likely due to their short amount of driving experience. This means they often pay more when it comes to auto insurance quotes. However, there are many insurance companies out there that offer discounts for teens if they are good students, complete driver education classes, or have monitoring devices installed in their vehicle. Find multiple quotes in order to find the best policy for your teen.

As you can see, there are many different ways to save money on auto insurance quotes. The best thing you can do is put the effort forth to research thoroughly and find as many quotes as you can. This way you can be sure you know what is out there and available to you.

Doing the Lindy for fun and exercise in Moscow

A forbidden cultural import during the cold war, American swing dance and rock 'n' roll are now seeing a jump in popularity among Russians who embrace the retro Americana.

By Ann T?rnkvist,?Correspondent, Sven Hultberg Carlsson,?Correspondent / December 25, 2012

Pavel Sotnikov (r.) and his teammates take to the dance floor at an informal Friday night dance competition in Moscow.

Ann T?rnkvist

As teenagers during the Soviet era, Sergey and Lyudmila Gubarev used to copy American-inspired songs onto cassette tapes that then made the rounds among their friends. The music on the tapes, spanning from the 1940s onward, offered them a peek through the Iron Curtain that closed off Western cultural imports.

Today, they still love the same American tunes, but it is not such a clandestine affair.

Sergey and Lyudmila, now both 40, dance swing and the Lindy Hop to keep ?young and fit.? And they?re far from alone. Dance instructor Olga Moiseeva says she has seen a tenfold hike in the number of Muscovites wanting to twist and shake. Ten years ago, only three pupils would show up to one of her classes. Nowadays she arranges Lindy-Hop parties that draw hundreds of dancers.

"The Lindy Hop is about freedom," Ms. Moiseeva says. "And the music is fantastic. But it's about more than the dance, it's about taking classes, competing and, for some, about the cars and the fashion." A burgundy skirt, discrete pumps, and a champagne-colored rose in her wavy hair sets the glamorous Moiseeva apart from her students during a weeknight beginners' class. But once dancers are ready to compete, they ramp it up in the style stakes.

Muscovites going retro

It's Friday night. The air smells of hairspray. Gym bags line the room ? a rehearsal space on the second floor of an anonymous theater just outside Moscow's city center ? where about 50 dancers are getting ready. A group of women apply fake eyelashes by a floor-to-ceiling mirror while a young man adjusts a white tie over his black shirt. "A lot of people are inspired by American '40s and '50s culture and want to express that," says the evening's emcee, Nasdiya Murashko, clad in a navy-blue sailor dress with a wide A-line skirt.

Upstairs, in the dance hall, Pavel Sotnikov is getting ready to compete in a getup of tight jeans and a checkered shirt. His passion is early rock 'n' roll, but tonight it is all about the boogie-woogie. "This music wasn't very popular before, but there are more and more people discovering it, and there's more of a general interest in retro culture than five years ago," Mr. Sotnikov says.

A few competitors have already performed when Sotnikov and his three partners enter the dance floor. The music starts, and the quartet doesn't have a single step out of beat. The audience rewards them with thunderous cheers as the music wraps up, and the dancers throw kisses in the air in all directions.

"Sure, we might win," says a sweaty and elated Sotnikov, "but it doesn't matter. These people are my friends, I want to feel that sense of community with the audience."

Act follows act as the competition continues, mixing high and low, but mostly the competitors stick to the swing and Lindy Hop.

Taking it on the road

As the evening draws to a close, Sotnikov and his teammates are crowned winners. Yet their sights are already set on the next target ? dance camps abroad.

"I'm in the habit of taking two weeks off every year to dance, usually a week in Sweden and the second week somewhere else. That's when I get to meet people from all over the world, which is the best thing about this scene," says Sotnikov.

He won't be going alone. The tiny town of Herr?ng in central Sweden is legendary in retro dance circles for its annual festival. "At this point we?re almost famous in Herr?ng," says one dancer, Oleg Rusakov. Like most middle-aged dancers in attendance, his fascination for Western pop culture began with furtive tape exchanges in the Soviet Union.

Roman Molkhanov, 24, is of another generation. He and his group of young dancers have traveled to Moscow from Tula, 120 miles south of the capital. Their eyes are also set on the Swedish dance camp. "We really want to go to Herr?ng. We don't have a lot of money but we're working hard to save up money to go."

Lindy-Hop instructor Moiseeva says Herr?ng is a nice change for Russian dancers. "It's a surprise for them, because we don't really have a dance culture in Russia ? we sit and sing more than we get up and dance ? so Herr?ng is light-hearted and fun for us. I try to copy Herr?ng here at my dance studio."

Are Your Listening Skills Your Job Search Problem ... - Careerealism

Job Search ProblemEvery once in a while, I run across what seems to be a good candidate on paper and he or she is just struggling to land a job. They might have master?s degrees and everything that would suggest they are highly competitive. Then it happens. You?re in a conversation with the person for 10 minutes and you?ve nailed his?job search problem?? THEY DON?T LISTEN.

Communication skills are vital in business. The business world would come to a complete stand still if we couldn?t actively communicate with our customers and with our work team. Seems simple enough but some people truly can?t communicate well. They might talk a mile-a-minute, but that doesn?t mean they can communicate.

Communication, however, is a two-way process. One person speaks, the other person listens. If the person listening can?t, or doesn?t fully understand what the other person is attempting to communicate, they repeat back what they hear, acknowledge what they heard or ask questions. That process is called ?active listening.? It is taking an equal role in communication.

Imagine what it?s like to have the person blow past what you?re saying with almost no acknowledgement that you even said something. Now try to imagine asking a question 10 minutes ago and, if you got an answer in all of that, you?re probably having a tough time figuring it out.

Hiring managers or managers in general start developing a fairly short attention span because they have so much on their plate and need to focus on the most high pay-back things. They will simply write you off if they think you aren?t listening ? especially to them. The assumption they make is that if you can?t listen or focus on what they need to hear, then you most likely can?t do a very effective job. It?s tough to train someone to listen when they don?t already possess that capability.

Communication, especially listening, is a big part of the ?likeability? factors of: Know ? Like ? Trust. They might get to know you because you?ve talked so much but they may not like you too much because you aren?t focusing on their needs. They also can?t trust you because they don?t think you?ll take the right action when it is the most critical because you aren?t really paying attention.

Let me suggest a few things you can do if you are concerned, or even if you want to improve your communication.

Any time you are speaking (unless you are instructing) limit each verbal input to two minutes or less. I suggest you work with someone who will ask you questions and then keep track of how long your responses are. You need to get a feel for how long two minutes is by being kept in that window. You need to practice this until you nail it every time.

Practice ?active? listening. Active listening is when you participate with what the other person is saying before devising any response. Active listening can take a few forms. It may mean you repeat back what they say in your own words, to ensure you understand. Look for their acknowledgement that you understand. Ask a question of understanding like ?So in other words, you are saying/asking?? People want to have the other person pay attention to them. This is how you do that.

  • Pause for a few seconds before responding. During this pause, you can do the next step plus it will clear out any preconceived responses. It will give the impression that you are really giving the question real thought.
  • Repeat back questions you are being asked, even if it?s in your head. You need to make sure you grasp the question first before responding.
  • When you are complete, ask if you answered the question to their satisfaction.
  • Self examine. If you?re talking excessively, you might be nervous. If you are, look for relaxation techniques to help you calm down and be present with the other person.

You can be the most brilliant person on the planet. If you can?t deliver and receive well (speak and listen), all that brilliance will do you no good. Make sure you aren?t undermining your own career and job search by failing to listen well.

This is a job search problem you don?t want to have.

Syrian interior minister leaves Beirut hospital

(AP) ? Officials at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport say Syria's interior minister has been released from a hospital and is flying home aboard a private jet.

The officials said Mohammed al-Shaar left Beirut on Wednesday and is on his way to Damascus. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations,

Al-Shaar was wounded on Dec. 12 when a suicide bomber exploded his vehicle outside the Interior Ministry, killing five and wounding many, including the minister.

The Syrian government denied at first that al-Shaar was wounded. Then it emerged that he was brought to a Beirut hospital last week for treatment.

The same minister was wounded when a bomb went off on July 18 during a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus, killing four top officials.

DAVIS, Calif. (AP) ? A veterinarian at the University of California, Davis, has some good news about a dog from the Philippines who became an international hero after sacrificing her snout to save two young girls.

After completing six weekly intravenous chemotherapy infusions, Kabang appears to have beaten the cancer she was suffering from, Gina Davis, the primary care veterinarian at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Davis, told the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/Ti87pl).

The dog, however, is still facing treatment for heartworms in her arteries before she can have the gaping wound on her face closed. Full treatment of that condition was put on hold during cancer therapy.

Kabang ? a female mongrel ? had the first of three arsenic-based heartworm shots on Dec. 4 and is expected to receive the other two in the second week of January, Davis said.

"It will be one to two months for her to recover from that before she goes in and has the surgery," Davis said.

Kabang had her snout and upper jaw sheared off when she jumped in front of a speeding motorcycle, saving her owner's daughter and niece from serious injury or death, according to newspaper reports in the Philippines.

The dog ended up in Davis earlier this year after a nurse from Buffalo, N.Y., spearheaded a fundraising campaign to bring her to the U.S. Veterinarians in the Philippines were apparently unable to treat her injuries.

Surgeons are planning to perform two or three procedures. The first will involve dental work, extractions and covering exposed roots.

They will then try to close the dog's wound and restore nasal functions. The dog's bony structures are currently exposed to air, increasing the chance of infection, Davis said.

Kabang may return to the Philippines in May or June. The bill for her treatment is expected to top $10,000.

Davis said despite Kabang's many conditions, the dog appears to be in good spirits.

"She has come through everything very well," Davis said. "Her appetite is still good. She's still bright and happy."

Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ? Try These ...

Many people are drawn to commercial real estate investing because of its potential for high profit, but the truth is that this type of investing also requires a high amount of perseverance, preparation, and research. A lot of people just like yourself become successful at real estate investing by keeping informed and applying the tips in the following article. Stick to the advice presented below to help you succeed in the world of commercial real estate.

It is prudent to consult a tax specialist before purchasing real estate. You adviser can help you calculate the overall cost you will incur in making the purchase, and what portion of the income deriving from the property will be taxable. Work with them so that you can find a lower tax area.

One counterintuitive fact about the apartment market is that many experts recommend avoiding properties with fewer than ten units, as they are actually more of a pain to deal with than large complexes. Each situation is different; however, the research about a particular property will govern your decision.

TIP! Before you start out on your search for the perfect commercial property, you should be fully attuned to the specifics of your business needs. Know exactly what kind of office space you will be using.

Always rent out all the available space in your commercial rental properties. You?re the one who has to pay to keep the building maintained, and if no one?s renting them, you?re wasting your money. If several of your properties are vacant, reexamine your management style and look for ways to fix issues that are keeping tenants away.

Learn how the firm you are considering measures results. How do they determine the space requirements? What is their property selection criteria? How do they negotiate? This and many other little details will all affect your dealings. Understanding where they stand in regards to these things before you sign with this company will be a wise decision.

Before buying a commercial property, research its net operating income to make sure you don?t lose money. Success means that your income outweighs your operating costs.

TIP! Before you present an offer for commercial property, be sure to have your funding source in place. Discuss the situation with your loved ones as well as other investors, and create a list of good lenders available to you.

Go as big as you can when you?re looking at a commercial real estate investment. You may only have planned to buy a five-unit building, but managing 10 or even 50 units will not be any harder. Even a building with five units needs to be commercially financed the same way as a larger building. However, the more units a building has, the less money you?ll pay per unit.

Negotiating is essential. Make sure that you are heard and that you fight for a fair price for the property.

Real Estate Broker

TIP! Try to consider feng shui when you are looking to buy commercial properties and for your office at home. De-cluttering and open spaces are two key tenets, both of which are attractive to buyers.

In order to find a reputable real estate broker who is going to suit your needs, ask your preferred choices some questions, including their idea of what constitutes a success and a failure. Have them define what they consider to be a good result. Gain a clear understanding of their preferred strategies and methods. You need to share the same strategies and beliefs as your real estate broker in order to work successfully with them.

Write down your goals before you start to search out the perfect commercial property. Will the property be used to operate your own company, or will you lease it out to other businesses? It is important to have things like this nailed down before you start the process, so you do not find yourself struggling with these questions, when by this point in the game, you should be focused on other aspects of any potential deal.

Take some digital photos of your property. Make certain your photos highlight specific defects such as carpet spots, wall holes and bathroom discolorations.

TIP! Net Operating Income, the commercial metric for real estate, needs to be understood. In order to be successful, you will have to make sure that you never dip into the negative.

PFT: Seahawks enjoy getting revenge on Harbaugh

Tim TebowAP

Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has acknowledged that he was upset when he learned last week that he had been bypassed on the depth chart by Greg McElroy. Now Tebow says his goal now is to become a good quarterback ? somewhere ? in 2013.

Tebow told ESPN?s Adam Schefter he is ?more determined than ever to dedicate my entire off-season to becoming the best quarterback I can be next season.?

Regarding the ESPNNewYork.com report that Tebow told Jets coach Rex Ryan he didn?t want to play in the Wildcat after he was informed that McElroy would start in place of the benched Mark Sanchez, Tebow admitted that he was upset, and he expressed his displeasure to Ryan. Schefter?s report does not specify, however, whether Tebow flat-out refused to play in the Wildcat when he found out on Tuesday that McElroy was starting, or whether Tebow merely said he was unhappy that he wasn?t getting the opportunity to start.

Whatever transpired between Tebow and Ryan, Tebow did tell Schefter that on Friday he told Ryan that he was willing to do whatever it took to help the team win. By that time, the Jets had been planning to use receiver Jeremy Kerley in the Wildcat role, and that?s what they did in Sunday?s game against the Chargers.

The fact that Tebow even had to express to Ryan that he was willing to do anything to help the team win is telling. If a player is conducting himself the right way, it should go without saying that he is willing to do whatever he has to do to help his team win. If the Jets? coaches needed to be reassured that Tebow was willing to do whatever he had to do to help the team win, that strongly suggests that Tebow isn?t quite the humble, hard-working player that he tries to portray himself as. The job of a football player is to play football the way his coaches tell him to play. It doesn?t matter if Tebow thinks he deserves to start ahead of McElroy. The Jets? coaches decided that McElroy was the starter for Sunday?s game, and Tebow?s job was to support the team in whatever role the coaches told him to play.

If Tebow ever expressed anything other than a firm commitment to doing whatever the coaches asked him to do, then he?s no better than Santonio Holmes, who was widely ripped last year for being a destructive force in the Jets? locker room. Holmes was pilloried all offseason for the way he acted at the end of the Jets? season in 2011. If Tebow is acting the same way at the end of the Jets? season in 2012, he deserves the same scorn.

As for Tebow?s ambitions of being a starter next year, well, good luck with that. There is exactly one NFL team that might be willing to give Tebow a shot, and that team ? Jacksonville ? would be willing to give him a shot for business reasons, not for football reasons. Tebow is desired in Jacksonville because he?s viewed as a good guy, not a good football player. And the news of the last 24 hours suggests that he?s actually not that good a guy.
